Home Maintenance Resolutions for the New Year

As the calendar turns to a new year, many of us feel inspired to set resolutions for ourselves related to personal goals and aspirations. Why not make similar resolutions for your home? Home maintenance is an investment in your home and will contribute toward its longevity and curb appeal, as well as added value. We have compiled some simple resolutions for your home maintenance in the New Year to keep your home clean and safe:

  • Check your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. Batteries in these should be changed, at minimum, once a year, and the start of a new year is a good reminder. These devices may be easily forgotten, but they are critical to protecting the safety of your family and your home.
  • Do not neglect your home’s exterior. Over time, the exterior surfaces of your home—from the shingles of your roof down to the concrete of your driveway—become weatherworn and susceptible to contamination. For example, mold and mildew might be festering in your roof shingles or adhered to your home siding. Take the time to schedule professional power washing services throughout the year to ensure each area of your home’s exterior is clean and contaminant-free.
  • Regularly change your furnace filter. It is a best practice to change your filters monthly during peak heating season. Doing so will improve the overall efficiency of your furnace. A dirty filter will make your heating system work harder, which you may notice in an increased energy bill.
